Cuboid syndrome is a common problem on the outside of the foot. The cuboid bone is an important pulley for the action of the peroneal tendon as it passes underneath it. For the bone to act as a pulley it must be stable when the peroneus longus muscle contracts. If the bone is not stable, then contraction of the muscle will move the bone and strain the joints around the bone, resulting in cuboid syndrome. Cuboid syndrome is more common in athlete. The symptoms of cuboid syndrome start out as mild and do not interfere with sporting activity, but later become more serious. The treatment of cuboid syndrome is usually a cuboid manipulation to restore the subluxed cuboid. Low dye strapping and other strapping techniques can also help stabilise the bone. The better long term treatment for cuboid syndrome is the use of foot orthotics.
